Mobile Pump Operator (MPO) Practice Exam

The assertion that the Mobile Pump Operator (MPO) can increase pump discharge pressure to overcome a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) or Pressure Relief Device (PRD) is false for several critical reasons.

When a PRV or PRD is in place, it serves as a safety mechanism designed to release excess pressure from a system. The primary function of these devices is to protect the equipment and personnel by preventing overpressure situations. Increasing the pump discharge pressure would not effectively bypass the PRV or PRD; instead, it is likely to lead to system failure or hazardous conditions, as the PRV or PRD would continue to open at its set pressure to relieve any excess buildup.

Moreover, purposed mechanisms such as a PRV or PRD are calibrated for specific pressure thresholds. Attempting to raise the discharge pressure beyond these limits fundamentally undermines the safety roles of these valves and can result in unwanted discharge, leading to potential damage and safety concerns.

In controlled scenarios, adjustments might be made, but this does not imply that the MPO’s action of increasing the discharge pressure should be directed towards overcoming the PRV or PRD. Instead, proper operational procedures should involve adhering to the parameters set by these safety devices. Therefore, the statement
